A Y-STR DNA test also called the Male lineage test, helps determine the biological relationship between two males who suspect they share the same paternal lineage.

Y-STR testing identifies whether the male individuals tested are biologically related via a common paternal line.

This type of DNA relationship testing is often used when the alleged father is unavailable for direct paternity testing. Any of his other male relatives can submit a sample.

The Y-chromosome is passed from father to son relatively unchanged, so Y-STR testing works by analysing specific locations on the Y-chromosome to identify whether the two males being tested share similar Y-STR profiles. Males who are biologically related will have similar Y-STR profiles, and males who are not biologically related will have very different Y-STR profiles.

Note: Only males can take the Y-STR Test.
