Discreet Paternity DNA Testing With Non-Standard Samples

When a standard cheek-swab sample is not available, certain non-standard biological samples may sometimes be considered for personal paternity DNA testing.

Sample suitability depends on the type of material, its condition, storage, contamination risk and the amount of recoverable DNA. Because each non-standard sample requires specific collection and handling instructions, please contact Suspire before collecting or sending any sample.

Different sample types require different collection, storage, packaging and laboratory handling procedures.

Possible Non-Standard DNA Samples

  • Hair samples — subject to laboratory assessment
  • Nail clippings
  • Used toothbrushes or other suitable personal items
  • Ear wax samples
  • Other biological materials accepted by the laboratory

Not every non-standard sample will contain sufficient usable DNA. For this reason, all non-standard samples must first undergo mandatory viability testing.

Important: Mandatory Viability Testing

Every non-standard sample requires mandatory viability testing before relationship DNA analysis can proceed.

  • The viability testing fee starts from AED 1,000 per sample.
  • The exact viability fee depends on the sample type and applicable laboratory requirements.
  • The viability testing fee is non-refundable.
  • Once a non-standard sample has been submitted and received for testing, the sample cannot be returned.
  • If the laboratory determines that the submitted sample is non-viable, another suitable sample must be provided.
  • A non-viable sample does not automatically cancel the DNA testing request. A replacement sample must be provided for the testing process to continue.

Why Is Viability Testing Required?

Standard cheek swabs are collected specifically for DNA testing and generally provide a reliable source of biological material.

Non-standard samples may contain smaller quantities of DNA or DNA that has been affected by age, storage, environmental exposure or contamination.

Viability testing is therefore required to determine whether sufficient usable DNA can be recovered from the submitted sample before relationship analysis can proceed.

Please note: Submission of a non-standard sample does not guarantee that sufficient usable DNA will be recovered for testing.

How the Process Works

  1. Contact our team
Tell us what sample you have available and which biological relationship you want to investigate.
  2. Receive sample-specific instructions
We explain the appropriate collection, storage and packaging requirements for the sample type.
  3. Submit the sample
The sample is submitted according to the applicable laboratory instructions. Once received for testing, the submitted sample cannot be returned.
  4. Mandatory viability testing
Every non-standard sample is first tested to determine whether sufficient usable DNA can be recovered.
  5. If the sample is viable
The sample can proceed to the appropriate DNA relationship analysis.
  6. If the sample is non-viable
Another suitable sample must be provided. The original viability testing fee remains non-refundable.

What Happens If the Sample Is Non-Viable?

If the laboratory is unable to recover sufficient usable DNA from the submitted sample, the sample will be considered non-viable.

In this situation:

  • The viability testing fee remains non-refundable.
  • The submitted sample cannot be returned.
  • Another suitable sample must be provided.
  • The DNA testing request does not automatically end because one sample is non-viable.

The replacement sample will also need to satisfy the applicable laboratory requirements before relationship testing can continue.

Personal Testing and Legal DNA Testing Are Different

Personal / Informational Testing

Suitable non-standard samples may be considered for personal relationship testing when laboratory requirements are met.

These tests are intended to provide private biological relationship information and are different from formal legal chain-of-custody testing.

Legal / Chain-of-Custody Testing

Legal DNA testing requires verified participant identification, supervised sample collection and a documented chain-of-custody process.

Privately collected non-standard samples should not be considered substitutes for properly collected chain-of-custody samples when a legally admissible DNA test is required.

Your current Suspire process already distinguishes privately collected non-standard samples from formal chain-of-custody legal testing. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Pricing and Viability Testing

All non-standard samples require mandatory viability testing before relationship analysis can begin.

The viability testing fee starts from AED 1,000 per sample and varies depending on the type of sample and laboratory requirements.

The viability testing fee is non-refundable, including situations where the submitted sample does not provide sufficient usable DNA.

If the submitted sample is found to be non-viable, another suitable sample must be provided for the testing process to continue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all non-standard samples require viability testing?

Yes. Every non-standard sample must undergo mandatory viability testing before it can proceed to DNA relationship analysis.

How much does viability testing cost?

Viability testing starts from AED 1,000 per sample. The exact fee varies depending on the type of sample and laboratory requirements.

Is the viability testing fee refundable?

No. The viability testing fee is non-refundable, including if the sample does not produce sufficient usable DNA.

What happens if my sample is not viable?

If sufficient usable DNA cannot be recovered, another suitable sample must be provided. The original viability testing fee remains non-refundable.

Can I get my submitted sample back?

No. Once a non-standard sample has been submitted and received for laboratory testing, it cannot be returned.

Can hair be used for a paternity DNA test?

Certain hair samples may potentially provide usable DNA, but suitability depends on the sample provided. All such samples require viability testing before relationship analysis.

Can nail clippings be used for DNA testing?

Nail clippings may sometimes be accepted as a non-standard sample. Mandatory viability testing is required before further DNA analysis.

Can a toothbrush be used as a DNA sample?

A used toothbrush may contain biological material suitable for DNA recovery, but this is not guaranteed. The sample must first undergo mandatory viability testing.

Should I collect the sample before contacting Suspire?

Whenever possible, contact our team first. Collection, handling, storage and packaging requirements vary by sample type, and incorrect handling may reduce the chance of recovering usable DNA.

Can non-standard samples be used for legal DNA testing?

Privately collected non-standard samples generally do not meet the formal identification and chain-of-custody requirements used for legally admissible DNA testing. Legal testing requires a separately controlled collection process.

Important: Sample suitability depends on the biological material provided, sample condition, storage, contamination risk and laboratory assessment. Non-standard samples are not guaranteed to produce a usable DNA profile. Customers should ensure that they have appropriate authority or permission to submit biological material for testing where required.
