First: There Is No Country Name Written Inside Your DNA

This is probably the most useful idea to understand before looking at any ethnicity estimate.

DNA contains genetic information inherited from earlier generations. It does not contain a field that says “Saudi Arabian,” “Indian,” “Emirati,” “Iranian,” “African” or any other modern nationality.

Instead, ancestry testing looks for genetic patterns. Those patterns are then compared with DNA from groups used as reference populations.

Does 25% From a Population Mean One Grandparent Came From There?

Not automatically.

It is tempting to convert every percentage into a family-tree position: 25% equals one grandparent, 12.5% equals one great-grandparent, and so on. Real inheritance and ancestry estimation are more complicated.

You inherit DNA through a random process. The ancestry algorithm is also estimating population similarity rather than reading a documented family tree.

A percentage can therefore be an interesting clue, but it should not be treated as proof that one specific ancestor came from a particular modern country.

Genetic ancestry

Genetic ancestry can provide clues about population history and inherited DNA patterns.

Ethnicity in everyday life can involve culture, language, nationality, religion, community, history and personal identity. Those things cannot be reduced to an ancestry percentage generated by an algorithm.

A person can therefore have a genetic ancestry estimate that is much more complicated than the cultural identity they have lived with throughout their life.

Questions People Naturally Ask When They See Their Results

“My family says we come from one place. Why does my DNA show others?”
Family history and genetic inheritance are not always identical stories. Populations have migrated and mixed for generations, and documented family knowledge may cover only part of a much longer ancestry history.
“Does a small percentage prove I had an ancestor from there?”
Small ancestry assignments should generally be interpreted cautiously. Population boundaries are not genetically perfect, and neighbouring groups can share substantial genetic history.
“Can DNA tell me my tribe?”
An autosomal ethnicity estimate should not normally be treated as proof of membership in a specific tribe, clan or modern social community.
“Can it tell me my exact village?”

Does Chromosome Painter Tell Which Side Came From My Mother or Father?

Not automatically from the ancestry painting itself.

FTDNA notes that the two copies within each autosomal chromosome pair are displayed in arbitrary maternal/paternal order in Chromosome Painter.

Likewise, Family Finder's basic ethnicity percentages do not simply separate themselves into “this percentage came from mother” and “this percentage came from father.”

FamilyTreeDNA does have separate family-matching tools that can help classify certain DNA relatives as maternal or paternal when enough family information and matching relatives are available, but that is a different concept from the myOrigins ancestry percentages themselves.

Why Can Two DNA Companies Give Different Ethnicity Percentages?

Because ancestry estimates are models, not direct measurements of nationality.

Why Can My Ethnicity Results Change Later?

Your DNA has not suddenly changed.

What can change is the information used to interpret it.

That means an ancestry estimate may become more detailed, or percentages may shift between related population groups.

A changed ancestry estimate does not mean the laboratory changed your DNA.

It means the interpretation model or reference information used to analyse that DNA has been updated.

Why Can Brothers and Sisters Get Different Ancestry Percentages?

Because siblings do not inherit exactly the same mixture of DNA from their parents.

Each child receives a different combination through genetic recombination.

Two full siblings can therefore have the same family tree but somewhat different inherited DNA segments. Their ancestry estimates may reflect those differences.

This does not mean one sibling suddenly has ancestors the other does not. They share the same recent biological parents, but they inherited different pieces of the parental genetic mixture.

One of the easiest mistakes to make in genetic genealogy is to think that all DNA ancestry tests tell the same story.

Family Finder can also provide autosomal DNA relative matches.

Direct paternal line

Y-DNA

Y-DNA follows the direct paternal line through the Y chromosome and is relevant to specific male-line ancestry questions.

It is not the same thing as a broad myOrigins ethnicity percentage report.

Direct maternal line

mtDNA

Mitochondrial DNA follows the direct maternal line and can provide information about maternal-line ancestry.

FamilyTreeDNA updated its Family Finder laboratory processing in 2026.

For Family Finder samples entering processing from March 2, 2026 onward, FTDNA states that it uses a custom targeted next-generation sequencing panel rather than the previous microarray approach.

For most people exploring their ancestry, the important point is not the laboratory technology itself. The practical experience remains centred on genetic genealogy features such as matching, myOrigins and ancestry-analysis tools.
